Juneau is Alaska’s capitol city and it was the first community established after Alaska became a part of the US ownership in 1867. It is the second largest city in area in the US, at 2717 square miles of land and 538 square miles of water. Juneau has no highways in or out. All the cars, busses or trucks that are used here come in by ferry or barge. There is one major roadway north and south, but it doesn’t go far. Juneau has a Walmart and an airport and it is quite busy, especially during tourist season.
We met Bruce and Debbie G. at the dock and they were our kind hosts showing us around town and the area. We went up the tram, had a native lunch of fried Halibut and chips at the Sandbar Grill, then went to a neat sanctuary on the northern channel, the Mendenhall glacier, a mining museum and then we had dinner at the Thane Ore House Salmon Bake south of town. Bruce is a.k.a. BTPost on my bulletin boards.
